On Route to Beijing: A Boxer Reaches His Dreams

Completed his training with Kitchener-based Boxing by Syd Vanderpool and Game Day Fitness Centre, welterweight boxer Rolande Moses is on route to Beijing to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games.

Having entered into the Olympic trials with less than four years of training and only nine fights under his belt, Rolande is optimistic about his trip to China. “It’s been a dream of mine to compete at the Olympics,” he adds, “Compared to some opponents I have only been fighting for a short while, but I am focused and ready.”

A former basketball and track athlete, Rolande was forced, due to a knee injury, to find a new sports outlet for his energy and drive: boxing. “I told my very first boxing coach that one day I was going to make it to the Olympics, and now that day is here.”

Recent matches in Chicago and Trinidad guaranteed Rolande a spot on Grenada’s team, also his home country, making him the first boxer to represent the island nation at the Olympic Games.

Joining NHL players Evan Brophy (Chicago Blackhawks) and Bryan Little (Atlanta Thrashers), Rolande trains at Game Day Fitness, working with a group of specialists including Keith Vanderpool, a recent graduate of massage therapy, and Syd Vanderpool, a former world champion boxer and the owner of the eponymous Boxing by Syd Vanderpool. A full roster of fitness and health professionals has helped Rolande truly become a fine-tuned physical machine.

Confident of Rolande’s chances at the games, Syd says, “Seeing Rolande come so far in such a short amount of time is phenomenal. My job is to make sure that his head is ready to allow his body to do what it’s most capable of: winning an Olympic medal.”

Game Day Fitness owner Rob Cowie adds, “Rolande’s work ethic and quest to become a champion is unparalleled. In spite of all of his hard work and extreme training schedule, he carries on with a smile.” A training schedule which includes sparring with Boxing by Syd Vanderpool fighter and two-time Golden Gloves champion Julius Bunda.

Rolande ft will leave for Beijing July 29th, where he will meet his fellow teammates and walk in the Olympic Games opening ceremony taking place August 8th.
